The Importance of Face-to-Face Networking

Once upon a time, there was a world without email, social media, and texting. The brave souls of this time had to communicate with words directly with each other, whether in person or over the phone. The advancement of technology removed the necessity of this and made the world a better, more connected place.

We say that in jest, but the point remains. The advent of digital communication tricks us into thinking we’re forming the same kind of connections. Even in the professional world, sites like LinkedIn build professional networks quickly but miss the value of actually meeting in person. Networking is crucial to professional success, but we think we can fake it over the internet. Nothing beats the importance of face-to-face networking, and here’s why.

Feel the energy

You can indeed have an exciting chat online, but it’s not the same as meeting someone and instantly finding that spark of a shared passion. Out of those conversations, grow new ideas and plans that can lead to new business ventures and projects. The spontaneity of in-person conversations pushes this along because you don’t have time to consider your responses, allowing for more honest conversations.

Understand the tone

Have you ever received a text or email and immediately sensed a tone? You’re just reading words on a screen, but you swear there’s something else there. You may be right, and you may be wrong, but misunderstandings like that are less common during face-to-face networking. You can read the excitement and interest in another person without looking for a subtext.

It could come down to their body language or tone of voice, but either way, talking directly to someone allows you to interpret their interest more accurately. Because of this, you can know if you’ve met someone who is the kind of connection you’re looking for or someone you can succeed without.

Show off who you are

Sometimes ideas get sold not on their own merit but on the person trying to sell them. The right person can turn a dream into a reality because of their drive and ability to show others what they see. Over email or messages, that personality may not come through, and the idea could fall flat before it ever had a chance.

If you’re serious about what you want to do or what you want to achieve, the best way to show it is to meet people and talk to them about whatever your goal is. Find others who believe in you and it too and can help you get there.
