You don’t need an expert to tell you that your feelings on your first day at a new job can run the gamut from mild, adrenaline-induced excitement to all-out terror. Rest assured that wherever you fall on that scale, it’s perfectly normal. After all, this is a major life change, a serious commitment, and the way you plan to keep food on your plate and the rent paid…! No pressure!

No, seriously. While all of the above may be true, remember: they hired you. Simply pausing to remember this fact should help calm your nerves and give you an extra shot of confidence. But there are some additional steps to take to set yourself up for success, right from Day One.

Develop a 30/60/90-day plan.

You may have spent weeks or even months seeking out and landing your new role – and it’s tempting just to give notice, celebrate, possibly enjoy that short vacation, and then jump right into whatever is thrown at you on Day One. But a more deliberate plan for what you hope to accomplish during your first three months can be a huge advantage. Communicating it to your new team helps ensure you will add value and have the right goals and objectives in mind. Your plan might encompass:

  • Building relationships.
  • Branding yourself in your new role.
  • Setting and monitoring key personal and professional metrics.
  • Ensuring accountability.
  • Executing some quick wins that can lead to more substantial achievements in the future.

Introduce yourself.

It’s natural to feel hesitant about calling attention to yourself … after all, you want to fit in, not have a spotlight shining on you. (You can save that for your first major accomplishment!) But take every opportunity, when the timing is right, to give friendly yet professional introductions to everyone you meet.

Ask questions.

As reported by Harvard Business Review, employees perform better when they ask questions – and it’s true right from the start. By asking your new manager and peers for information, you’ll get up to speed quickly.

  • Prioritize your questions. Think about what you need to know. And, make them as specific as possible. You’ll feel better able to ask and less likely to waste time.
  • Write your questions down, so you don’t forget them. You can then ask them when the opportunity arises or during a one-on-one meeting with your new supervisor.

Learn your way around.

Get to know your new workplace. Find the restrooms, the break area, the stairs and elevators, and any amenities offered. Be proactive and learn how everything works, from the copier to the coffee machine. Before you know it, you’ll feel right at home … and ready for Day Two!
