It can be tough working as a recruiter in today’s environment. The challenges are significant, with many employers desperate for new hires and candidates on the opposite side of the equation: picking and choosing down to minute details where they want their next job to be. And you’re right in the middle of it all. Especially if you’ve been in the same role for a while, it can be easy for the shine to wear off and your enthusiasm to wane.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Even small changes can sometimes make a big, positive difference. Here are some tips to bring the joy back into your day to day:

Determine whether the problem is your job – or your boss.

A good percentage of the time, people don’t quit their jobs, they quit their bosses. If you really like your company and its culture, but simply can’t stomach your manager another day, think about switching roles, if that’s an option. The chance to work for a new supervisor or join a new team may be just the boost you need.

Learn something new.

You may simply be bored from doing the same thing day in and day out for what feels like forever. If this is the case, challenge yourself by learning something new. Join that professional organization, take that course, or volunteer for that stretch project. Boredom is a real job buzz killer, but being pumped up about something new is often a reliable cure.

Speak up about what you want.

Your boss can’t help if they don’t know you have a problem. In a professional, positive manner, speak up about your goals and state your case for change. Whether satisfaction would come from working on a new project, having more flexible hours, or even a salary increase, prepare ahead of time and … ask. The worst that can happen is your boss will say no, and you can then move on to Plan B.

Change up your workspace.

Even a small visual change in your office or workstation can bring more zip into things at work. Rearrange the furniture. Bring in some plants or wall art. Take the time to sort through all the stuff piled up on your desk, shelves and file cabinets. Especially if you’re a visual person, this will put a smile on your face when you arrive at work each day.
