Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is celebrated every year on November 19th to recognize the achievements of female leaders and empower all women around the globe. Over the past century, women have fought to make massive improvements in personal, educational, and professional settings; however, there still seems to be an overall scarcity of women in the workforce. Not only is there a disparity of female workers, but women also, on average, are offered much lower wages than their male counterparts. According to the World Bank’s Women, Business, and the Law 2022 report, roughly 2.4 billion working-age women do not receive equal economic opportunities, and 178 countries still maintain legal barriers preventing full economic participation. Women’s Entrepreneurship Day recognizes this gender gap and encourages women to step into leadership positions, driving economic expansion and making positive contributions in socioeconomic settings.

This holiday’s recognition began after the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO) was founded, with their mission to inspire and empower women while working to alleviate the generational curse of poverty. The organization was established in 2013 by Wendy Diamond, a humanitarian and entrepreneur who worked to expose the struggles of over 250 million impoverished girls globally. In 2014, the first celebration of “WEDO” was held in New York City at the United Nations after capturing the attention and encouraging billions of women everywhere. The tradition continues as the United Nations observes November 19th as Women’s Entrepreneurship Day every year.

As each year passes, the celebration of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day gains more awareness, taking several steps toward creating an environment where women can thrive personally, educationally, and financially. With the support of billions of women globally, WEDO continues to work to cultivate a world where all girls can learn, lead, and inspire.
